Live-Action Kaibutsu-kun to Return in New TV Special! A 90-minute show airs 2 weeks after manga-based TV series with Arashi’s band member Satoshi Ohno stars as the title character.
The official website for the live-action television series adaptation of Fujiko Fujio A’s Kaibutsu-kun supernatural manga has announced on Saturday that an all-new television special has been green-lit. The final episode of the television series aired on the NTV network on Saturday, but the 90-minute “M? Kaette Kita yo!! Kaibutsu-kun Subete Shinsaku SP” program will air on June 26 at 9:00 p.m. The story takes place after Kaibutsu-kun, the prince of Kaibutsu Land, is separated from his human friends Hiroshi and Utako and returns to his homeland. Fujiko Fujio A is best known for co-creating the classic manga Doraemon. Tokyo Movie Shinsha had previously animated his Kaibutsu-kun manga into a 1968-1969 television series, and Shin’ei Doga animated a remake from 1980 to 1982. There was also an anime film in 1981.

The Japanese publisher Shogakukan has launched its free Shonen Sunday for iPhone app on Apple’s iTunes Store in Japan on Wednesday. The app for iPhone and iPod touch mobile devices offers notable manga from Shogakukan’s Weekly Shonen Sunday magazine and charges an in-app purchase fee per volume. Shogakukan also has an iPad version in the works. The initial manga lineup includes the first five volumes from each of the following titles: Rumiko Takahashi’s Urusei Yatsura, Kazuhiro Fujita’s Ushio & Tora, Gosho Aoyama’s Detective Conan, and Takuya Mitsuda’s Major. Each volume costs 450 yen (about US$4.93), and two more volumes of each title will be added every week. The app is currently not available in the American version of the iTunes Store.

A schoolboy who uploaded manga to YouTube in advance of its release has been arrested for copyright infringement. Police from Japan’s national high tech crimes unit in Kyoto allege that the 14-year-old boy, a resident of Nagoya, used a digital camera to take photographs of pre-release manga which he would then compile into short movies, each page onscreen a few seconds, and these he would upload to YouTube. The manga uploaded covered key shonen titles, such as Naruto and One Piece, from top shonen rags Jump and Sunday, most being 4-5 days ahead of their release dates, although over the New Year’s holidays he managed a 9 day lead. In total, over a 3 month period of activity he is said to have uploaded 118 chapters from 30 titles, amassing a total of 8 million views. YouTube rapidly deleted all his uploads, and he was repeatedly forced to create new accounts, but still he continued until he was caught.
