Just curious, when Brera was straffing (firing) his cannon at Alto, the trajectory of his rounds were shifting to the left as if the round was being pulled and losing velocity. Well due to the physics of space a) there’s no gravity in which any type of force would shift the round and b)there’s no friction in space, therefore there’s no reason for the rounds to lose any velocity. The rounds should have continued straight into infinity. Yes I can be very technical.
Oh and the Nyan-Nyan restaurant that Ranka worked at is the same name as the restaurant that Lynn Minmay’s aunt and uncle owned.

In a way I hope Alto was killed.I don’t dislike Alto I just think it would make for an interesting ending to see how the characters would react around that scenario.That was really slick not showing the preview and instead showing someone thumbing through a scrapbook of pictures from the show.Hats off to the Japanese for prolonged suspense.

Man this series pays plenty of homages to the original series. Many of the key scenes actually have reversed outcome compared to the originals, but one can still see them.
The ending scene (right after the ending song) where a real person flips to photo album resembles the ending sequence in the original series.
One of Minmei’s song, which probably helped win the first space war, is now the weapon against the humans.
Well, until the next and final episode. Hopefully one or two OVAs to follow.

Wow… too many people never have anything good to say =P. Alto is cool, he can’t die lol. And I hope he ends up with Ranka instead of Sheryl.
Two things:
The first is in regards to Sman’s question about the strafing, and the beams being pulled, or being “turned” to the left in trajectory. You have to remember that they were fighting next to a planet. The MDE’s or Mini Dimension Eaters, are short term devises, and in any case they use fold energy and nothing involving gravity.(IF it were the case that it created a “mini” black hole, Michael, Alto, and the “Fairy” wouldn’t have been able to get off the planet and the planet itself would have been sucked in…plus black holes are based on an implosion in the first place.) As such, it’s not really a black hole, more like a collapse in time where everything that was and is just stops.
Second:
Most likely, Alto is not dead. Consider the following; the opening of the first episode was “triangular”. There was also the combined singing power of Shryl and Ranka, illustrated through the original introduction of “fold waves” when Luca was abducted by the first battleship to appear.(forgive me I can’t sight episodes) After that you have the constant via for attention from Alto and eventually this leads to a duet between Ranka and Shryl (which I happened to thoroughly enjoy). However, so far all of the events have been focused on a triangle between the three, even more so with the opening’s ending, going so far as to even put each of them within a triangle as they stand in a triangle themselves.
After those events you have a general splitting, where each character discovers their own path, but you also see fundamental flaws in their character because of this. Alto, losing the companionship and stability of his friends and normality of his environment becomes cold hearted; more so due to Ranka’s choice. Ranka’s choice leads to her finding out about her past, but also to her eventual enslavement to a large “overlord” program that will make the aliens Ranka went to slave its slaves. Finally, Shryl, who has regained the love and admiration of the people as a whole as well as the ability to protect and aid those people, also has come to know that she will die. With this the triangle, which has been present throughout the series so far has been broken.
Honestly, I’m kinda thankful for it. I’m well aware that it is going to be reformed, but Macross Frontier was starting to stray a little to much in the “plot clone” area for me. It shares a heap of similarities with the original, and anyone who was a fan, will understand what I mean by that. Not to say there aren’t differences, but if you understand what I mean; then you do.
Anyway:
Conclusion and Projections:
Quite basically the last episodes show us two things. One is that Shryl, Alto and Ranka are all lost, as is Ranka’s brother, though he is rather more dominated then lost.
The other is the opening; it really is amazing what you can pull from those. If you’ve noticed, which I’m very sure you have, the two main openings have had Shryl and Ranka singing together; combining into one if you will. Giving you a bit a foreshadowing.
So here’s my conclusion on this:
Alto, isn’t dead, he ejected and is most likely injured or floating unconscious. I believe that Shyrl, assuming that Alto has been killed, will rally herself and start to sing with renewed “emotional index”, allowing her to compete with Ranka or knock control Grace has on her. This will most likely also allow Ranka, having also been linked to the network and having a look inside Graces mind as well, to remove the transmitter node on her brother; freeing him. This will spawn one of two events. Both of these end up with Ranka and Shryl singing together in the end, because it would be the only way I can foresee the characters breaking Grace’s control.
One.) Grace, having reached the Hive mind of the Vajra, will take control having no longer any need of Ranka. She will then set her sights on Battle Frontier. Alto, who has been picked up and returned, will be in a bed resting or have just woken up, a worried Shryl waiting for him. Warning siren’s going off, they make it to the bridge only to see the vajra decimating the fleet to get to Battle Frontier, which begins a transformation, only to be destroyed mid transform. Shryl and Alto get out in time, having been shoved into a life pod by the “Brigadier General” And are picked up by the Macross Quarter, which has finally decided to join the fight, and which has also collected Ranka and her brother. The newly formed Skull squadron and the left over military of the Frontier fleet, fly to defeat grace, while Ranka and Shryl sing in unison. The act nullifying Grace’s control and making the playing field even.
Two.)
Grace, having reached the Hive mind of the Vajra, will take control having no longer any need of Ranka. She will then set her sights on Battle Frontier. Ranka and her brother escape the planet, intent on making it to Battle Frontier, only to come under fire from both Vajra and Valkerie. However, Macross Quarter Arrives, and Skull Squadron provides cover allowing Ranka and her brother to land. Ranka joins Shryl in song, allowing them to unify their ability, while the Captain of the Macross Quarter negotiates with the Battle frontier. An agreement is made and they work together to defeat the enemy in front of them. Battle frontier transforms as does Macross Quarter, and the fight begins.
Oh, should have mentioned the fact that Alto is like the keystone in the arch. Whenever he is near, or has made either of the two girls happy or sad, their singing and abilities there of increase (as is typical of the series). Likewise, he’s a good pilot, not a Roy Fokker, but good. He’ll most likely be the one riding in at the end to deliver a final bullet to the head to Grace in some way.
Oh… forgot… for those of you who commented that why hasn’t Alto and Sheryl… erm…. done it yet…. well, if you watch the last few episode properly, it is implied they had sex. If I’m not mistaken it is the episode where Alto rece3ive the message about the Macross Quarter’s desertion.
You know i see this as being Gundam Seed all over again where Kira comes back after supposedly dying. When he comes back he also gets some super, amazing Gundam. Like honestly we know it is true except i think when Alto comes back he is just going to be angry and will kill Brera, Ranka and Grace. Then the day will be saved and we can all watch another series of Anime! But only after Alto and Sheryl fuck each other like we all know they want to do.
Actually, Hickaru Ichijyo, was shot down and severely injured in the original Macross. He was also shot down and presumed lost on a totally different occasion. Just keep in mind fella’s. THIS IS MACROSS. Gundam Seed wasn’t even breathing yet when this thing came about. Neither was transformers or anything else…save voltron now that I think about it. So while it may be a cliche, it is hard to call anything that this series does, unoriginal to itself.
Hickaru Ichijyo is Rick Hunter for anyone who watched Robotech by the way, just his name in Macross.

2. Alto is NOT going to get a super upgrade on his machine. In fact he got downgraded when he chose to remain with the Macross Frontier.
3. Alto isn’t going to save the day. If he does, this would not be Macross.

Sman, you forget they were fighting close to the planet, so there for the gravity of the planet caused it to lose velocity, and so on and so forth, even tho probably not in the direction it should have.
As a side note for Alto being dead….you know that ain’t gonna happen, he’s gonna come back in the next ep probably like the ending half, and go SUPER SAYIN on the varja’s and whoop Berera’s ass lol. jk, can’t all be heroes :/

This episode remindes me of when Rick got shot down in episode 17 in the first Robotech saga.
He ends up in hospital, and when he wakes up he gets foker’s veritech/valkyrie fighter and REALY kick’s ass… So i dont think he’s dead either and he will be an asskicker in the future episodes so Berera shuldent try to brake that party
Ok, people, seriously Macross and Robotech are not the same thing. The story was changed, and while the character and basic animation is the same the actually functionality of a lot of the elements were screwed with. For instance, the reason the pilots can actually pilot the Valkyrie’s in the original in all the forms is because of their helmet, which was essentially a giant brain reader ( it read the intent and rational behind movements of the basic controls of the cockpit, and through the signals sent by the brain coverts said movements of controls into overall agility, hence why Roy can do back flips and such with his); This was never explained in Robotech it was just implied that they were and are bad asses.
So, just remember, Hickaru Ichijyo is the guy you mean when you talk about Rick Hunter. A lot more people die in Macross, and in the Japanese version the ending isn’t nearly as “Happy” and not everything is great. Southern Cross and the “Invid” portions of Robotech never occur in Macross as they are both completely separate anime series that Harmony Gold combined for release in the United States. They are not the same thing.

Pretty funny how Stillnotwalking provides the knowledgeable explanation as to why Robotech and Macross have nothing in common save the animation from the original Macross and a couple names and then someone immediately says something about a Frontier character having robotech powers. *sigh*
Anyway, for people saying “omg like this anime iz teh suck cuz alto died!!11!”, give it a chance. There’s one ep left and it’s not uncommon for a character to appear dead but then come back with a perfectly logical explanation.
He could have ejected. Hell, we’ve seen him do it at least once already :/
