Live-Action Dragonball Opens at #1 in 5 Asian Markets

Film adaptation of Akira Toriyama’s manga earns US$10.1M on 2,118 screens
The Hollywood Reporter newspaper reports that the live-action Dragonball: Evolution film opened as the #1 movie in five of the eight Asian markets in which it opened this past weekend. James Wong and 20th Century Fox’s adaptation of Akira Toriyama’s fighting manga made US$10.106 million on 2,118 screens to rank as the #4 film outside North America for the weekend. (According to Box Office Mojo, two of the three higher grossing films, Marley and Me and Gran Torino, opened in 34 and 27 markets, respectively.)
It was the top-grossing film in China, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand. According to the Screen International magazine’s website, the US$3.4 million box office take in 855 theaters in China was Fox’s fourth highest opening weekend in that market. It also delivered Fox’s third highest opening weekend in Malaysia with US$731,441 on 110 screens.
The Hollywood Reporter says that the film opened at #2 in Japan with US$3.3 million on 540 screens, but Kogyo Tsushinsha reports the film was #3 in Japan, below the live-action Yatterman film and the Doraemon: Shin Nobita no Uchū Kaitakushi (Doraemon the Movie: Nobita’s How Space Was Won, New Edition) anime. Similarly, Screen International reports that it opened at #2 in South Korea with US$1.2 million on 280 screens, but The Korea Times newspaper reports it was #1. The movie opened in South Korea on March 12, two days before the actual start of the weekend. It will open in the United Kingdom on April 3 and then open in the United States on April 8.

Please no offense, but how the **** can they make Goku a white person? I’m not racist or nothing but that make no freaking sense. there is no way this movie is a hit to the Asian Culture. Its like what they did to street fighter the movie. guile was the main protagonist when in the game and mangas its Ryu and Ken. This is just messed up. I’m going to jump off a bridge or something.
Asians just don’t get no respect. Only in the Math and science classrooms.

people are just watching this movie because its dragon ball!! it has goku picolo chi chi etc. in the end its going to get bad reviews

yea this movie sucked, big time, was #2 in japan, but read it somewhere that the rating was half-a-star to 1 star…out of 5 stars… pretty sad. they should NOT have mess with DB, or try to do a better job at it. I wondered it the producers and director ever seen gave a thought on how it’ll effect us (DB FANS), by putting this “crap” out there?? MONEY TALKS..i guess

wow people… all of you are saying how the movie sucked soo much, and that goku should be asian. just face it you know you liked it you just dont wont to admit it and sound stupid, and about goku, he is an alian so why should he be the same race as every one else in the movie. I was always a fan of dragonball, i grew up watching it. now i do admit that it wasnt completely true to the anime but it was still a great movie, with some awsome special effects.

I watched it. I wasn’t as horrible as I thought it would be. It was still pretty bad though. I will defend the fact that Goku isn’t Asian though. For those of you going, “OHHHH THEY DIDNT WATCH THE ANIME!!!” but at the same time saying, “HE SHOULD BE ASIAN!!! HE SHOULD BE JAPANESE!!!” please take your own advice and maybe re-watch the anime. Like lots of other people said already, he’s SAIYAN and like matt said, its remarkable he even LOOKS like us. No where in the anime did it say he was Japanese. There are animes such as Kuroshitsuji or Trinity Blood where its drawn Japanese style but takes place in another country. What if live actions are made of those they should be Japanese as well? Anyways yeah, it was pretty bad. Worse than both street fighters in my opinion.
