hmm i wouldnt say hes a genius at all. hes 42 years old so hes had plenty of experience and anyone who draws(well) can tell you its about 30% talent and 70% experience. this is manga in its most simplest form so im not fan of this style but i am a fan of digital manga illustration.

Hm, shouldn’t the left edge of the first mouth get darkened to emphasize the tongue?

No, in that kind of manga mouth, you’d hardly see the artist emphasizing the tongue at all. If he made a tongue noticeable in that drawing, it would be more of a western style.
