I actually learnt about Hikaru No Go from reading a list of japan’s favourite anime. After watching the series, I found it compelling, it manages to encapsulate the determination of a competitive sport, being GO, it highlights the enthusiasm of a game that is thousands of years old whilst interlacing the more emotive aspects of rivalry, maturity and comradeship. Not only does it manage to express the human quality vividly and with finesse, it adds to the story line a diversity with the appearance of Sai, the 1000 year old ghost, that both learns and evolves with Hikaru. It adds something that culminates into something highly cerebral… I highly recommend Hikaru No Go… it isn’t your average Slice of Life, nor is it your average progressive anime. It’s time to GO!
