he didnt really do anything special, last episode it said he used a blunt sword, when he crossed swords with that guy, he completely overwhelmed him and hit him probably and the side of gut, hence coughing up blood (damage to internal organs). At least that what it looks like

I think the point was that they needed to break dinns heart again thats what the president says, so it means that she tells him that she loved him but doesnt anymore thus breaking his heart, or something.
If he died but that wouldnt make sense, so if that is the cause then the anime wouldnt make any sense in what the characters said, because the whole point was to separate him from the thing without out losing dinn.
